So round 1 went to the cancer, but with the help of chemo I'm hoping Dad's going to rally back to take round 2. He's still not feeling very well, of course, but after getting the IV fluids three days in a row...

Chemo Update

Yesterday was supposed to be Cisplatin and Gemcitabine. The Cisplatin is a pretty intense drug, and they won't give it if the patient is not well-hydrated.

The Hair

The more powerful of the two chemo meds given today will probably cause what everyone's seen in cancer patients time and time again - the hair loss. We all know how my Dad loves his long henna reddened hair!

Starting Chemotherapy

My job is to make sure that he has what he needs, and that the nurses at Menlo Park know he's got an advocate (and of course to BE his advocate). So yesterday I went shopping, and since he hasn't been eating and doesn't like the hospital food at all, I brought a few of his favorite non-perishable foods just to have in case he wants them.

Dad's Wishes for 2009

On another note - two of his fondest wishes are:

1. To go to Burning Man and have all four of his children there with him.

2. To have Christmas in Las Vegas with the family.

I'm not sure if either one will be feasible, but some great people have put forth some effort toward trying to fund and/or locate an RV for him to stay in at Burning Man. You can see details by going to the link called "Andi's Blog" on the main page.

The Story Up To Now...

Sometime in January, my Dad started having a pain in his right shoulder. He took ibuprofen and that seemed to keep the pain at bay. While he was in San Francisco in February, his friend Wayne said he shouldn’t ignore it and took him to the VA at Palo Alto to get registered.
