So round 1 went to the cancer, but with the help of chemo I'm hoping Dad's going to rally back to take round 2. He's still not feeling very well, of course, but after getting the IV fluids three days in a row he's got a bit of an appetite and seems to be in a little bit better spirits. We had a little mix-up this morning with Menlo Park (again) in getting him to Palo Alto for his fluids this morning, but I kept on top of it and he got there in time and still made his radiation appointment later in the day. I spent my "lunch" waiting for him in front of the hospital, so only got to wheel him in to the AIC (ambulatory infusion center) and hang with him for about 5 minutes before I had to leave again. I ran out again in between meetings and picked up another egg crate seat cushion for him (that cancer in the hip bones with all the sitting is muy uncomfortable). Now he has one on his bed at Menlo Park and another to take with him for treatments and to use on his wheelchair
I didn't get to spend too much time with him today, because I had some work to catch up on from the last couple days, but at around 5 I picked up a small bowl of DQ and headed over. We split the ice cream and I left some Little Debbie swiss rolls there for him (thanks for the suggestion Robin!) in case he felt like another snack later. I stayed for about 30 mins before coming back over to the Fisher House to finish working for the day. Before leaving though, I set him up with an audio book (Odd Hours). That he asked for that is a good sign - he hasn't felt up to much more than watching TV and sleeping most of the time I've been here.
Tomorrow and Monday will be more radiation, and then Tuesday will be chemo (Gemcitabine only, I think), then he'll get a 2 week break before getting another round of chemo.
For anyone trying to get in touch with him - he hasn't been deliberately ignoring anyone, but he just doesn't feel up to talking on the phone much. His voice is breathy and somewhat slurred, so he has to repeat himself a lot, and his ears are stopped up so it's hard for him to hear as well. If there's anything anyone would like to tell him, please do not hesitate to let me know, and I will be sure he gets the message when I see him.
G'nite!
