It's been a few days since I posted anything, so I figured I'd do the weekend update. :) I spent the whole day with Dad yesterday - I arrived at about 11 and left around 7-ish. I think he had a pretty good day. He didn't want to eat anything, but had a couple of Ensures, so at least he's getting some calories. The left side of his neck was really swollen and painful when I arrived, but the right side had gone down. By the time I left, the swelling had reduced a little and he said it didn't hurt as much. Right when I got there Erin called, and Dad was feeling pretty good so he talked to her for a few minutes. She'll be out here for a couple days early next week, yay!
I brought some colored pencils and paper, my laptop and a couple books to keep myself occupied. I also brought some nail care stuff, just in case he wanted a pseudo-pedi. He slept a while, and I just occupied myself with my stuff. At first I tried to sketch him sleeping, but it turns out my sketching of 3 dimensional things sucks ass. So I just drew a few of my creatures, which turned out great. After Dad woke up I gave him a pedicure, spending extra time with the massage part. I used some gloves because well, anyone who knows me knows that I am not a lover of the feets. He really enjoyed it, but I noticed that he's got some edema in his feet and ankles. Apparently this can be a side effect of the chemo, but I'm not sure if it's a concerning side effect or just something to keep an eye on - if it's still bad today I'll mention it to the doc and see what she says. Later I also cleaned his fingernails and gave him hand/arm massages, for which I did not need gloves. :D
While I was sitting there on my computer, I rested my foot on the bed, trying to be stealthy so I wouldn't wake him up. Turns out I'm not so good at the stealthy thing either. :) He said "just so you know, it makes me feel good when your foot is touching me, just so I know you're there, maybe it's the drugs or something, but it feels really nice." I laughed - because while the drugs might make it feel even better, he's always been a very touchy feely kind of guy, and I said as much. He agreed.
Later, as I was leaving, I asked if he needed anything and he said no, then I started to walk out the door and he said "oh, can you plug in my cell phone?" No problem. He started to apologize for keeping me, silly Dad, I had to make sure he knew I didn't mind! Then I said "anything else?" and he said no. I started to walk out the door and he raised his hand and goes "oh, could you..." and smiled. I smacked his leg, called him a smart ass and told him I love him, then said good night.
I'm heading back over today, probably more of the same, just hangin out and whatnot. I was supposed to go hang out with my friend Nicole in SF today, but she got her weekends mixed up, so we'll try again next week. :o)

Oh, Jennie Kay said she visited him on Friday - I didn't know and Dad didn't mention it, but I wanted to say thanks for taking the time to go see him Jennie! :)

Re: Weekend Update.... With Wendi Goulette

Much Love to you and your family John. (Thank you to all who set up and maintain the blog) Many of us from the Mushroom Festival are reading your blog, and sending many and much positive energy and prayers your way. by the way- I just did a small Oyster mushroom growing demo for a group. I used the hand out you do for the grow/care instructions. I think of you always as I grow and teach others to grow Msuhrooms. Thank you for your friendship, and willingness to share the knowledge and experience inside of you with so many. I have been looking back at past pictures from the festival parades. In most of them along with my mushroom costumed wife and kids there seems to be a certain Bag pipe playing individual close or in the back ground. I wanted to let you know that we just found out that we have yet another small primordia in the belly!! That will make 4 kids for us! We better start making a new costume! John- Keep your head up man! We will see you in Telluride for years to come!

Where is he staying if we want to go visit him?

Re: Weekend Update.... With Wendi Goulette

Hi Heather, he's staying at the Menlo Park facility.
795 Willow Road (Building 331-B)
Menlo Park, CA 94025

Park in the first parking lot on the right after you turn in to the drive. Once in the building, follow the corridor all the way back until you have to go left or right, then head left. I do hope you visit him! He's not usually up for much chit chat, and falls asleep often due to the pain meds, but it does make him feel great to wake up and see those who love him nearby. :)

He's got a low dose of chemo today at the VA, but for the next two weeks after that he should be in his room pretty much all the time.

Re: Weekend Update.... With Wendi Goulette

Hi John,
This is Katie from Telluride. Rolley let me know of your illness and I'm very sorry to hear about it. Tried to call you once but it wasn't a good time for you to talk. Just want you to know that I'm thinking of you and wishing you strength and love to get through this ordeal. I'm glad you have family and friends in the area that are looking after you well. I'm sending love from Connecticut.
your friend,
Katie
